Agency Snapshot: Small Business Administration

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) helps Americans grow businesses and create jobs by providing resources and tools, including access to capital; opportunities in Federal contracting; access to entrepreneurial education; and disaster assistance for all disaster victims. SBA has three overarching goals for the next five years: (1) Grow businesses and create jobs, (2) Build an Agency that meets the needs of present and future small businesses, and (3) Serve as the voice for small businesses.

 

SBA’s mission is to maintain and strengthen the Nation’s economy by enabling the establishment and vitality of small businesses and by assisting in the economic recovery of communities after disasters. The agency's budget is used to support financial assistance, management and technical assistance, disaster assistance and regulatory assistance. Non-budgetary resources include borrowing authority and collections of loan principal, and interest and fees in financing funds. Like other agencies, SBA is committed to pursuing this important mission while managing its finances effectively, which includes ensuring its payments are accurate, using only property it needs, and accounting for its finances properly.

 

Small Business Administration Freeze the Footprint Baseline

In FY 2015, the Small Business Administration’s total office and warehouse square footage was 0 square feet - an actual decrease of 1,374,644 since FY 2013.

Small Business Administration Freeze the Footprint Projects

Washington District Office (WDO) Relocation Lease Consolidation

A space analysis determined that sufficient space existed in SBA's HQ building in Washington DC to accommodate the Washington District Office in the place of a renewal of the lease. This resulted in increased efficiency of operations, more efficient use of the existing space in the HQ facility, and a reduction in our overall space inventory.

NC District Office and SBA Answer Desk Space Consolidation (Charlotte, NC), Lease Consolidation

Due to a reduction in personnel, SBA consolidated existing space of 2 co-located offices in Charlotte, NC. SBA developed a plan to utilize a section of existing space for both offices, and return unused space, further reducing the footprint by 6000 SF.

HQ Modernization Project Space Redesign/ Reconfiguration of existing space

On the 5th floor of the SBA HQ building, SBA undertook a project to maximize the space utilization and improve the quality life of employees. While the project did not result in a decrease to the overall footprint, the number of system workstations increased by 10%, the number of private offices were reduced, and reduced height of systems furniture panels promotes a collaborative and open work environment that maximizes use of natural lighting, promotes use of more energy efficient lighting, and improves air quality.
