Strategic Objective
Protect Tribal Water Rights
Strategic Objective
Overview
BIA’s Water Rights Negotiation/Litigation Program defines and protects Indian water rights and settles claims through negotiations and litigation. Additionally, BIA conducts projects to aid tribes in protecting and managing their water resources including water needs assessments, ground and surface water quality and quantity studies, and the development of comprehensive Water Resource Management Plans.
Progress Update
This program funds tribal water projects to provide tribes the necessary technical research, studies and other information to serve as informed and prudent water managers. The percent of projects completed in support of water utilization, conservation, planning, management, and pre-development grew from 79 to 88 percent between 2010 and 2015. The Department will continue to improve monitoring plans to track progress on tribal water management projects and review contractual commitments with tribes to ensure continued levels of performance approaching 90 percent in the future.
