Goal Overview
Contribute to implementation of the President’s Executive Order establishing the National Strategic Computing Initiative including accelerating delivery of a capable exascale computing system that integrates hardware and software capability to deliver approximately 100 times the performance of current 10 petaflop systems across a range of applications representing government needs, and establishes a viable path forward for future High Performance Computing systems even after the limits of current semiconductor technologies are reached.
Strategies
Strategy #1: By March 2016 establish a multiyear exascale research program plan in support of DOE’s contribution to the President’s high performance computing initiative.
One of the objectives of the July 29, 2015 National Strategic Computing Initiative (NSCI) is to accelerate the delivery of a capable exascale computing system. The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Office of Science (SC) are assisting the Executive Council of the National Strategic Computing Initiative (NSCI) in creating a multiyear implementation plan aimed at achieving this objective.
Strategy #2: By Q4 FY2017 establish a plan for DOE’s contribution to research new progressive technologies that perform beyond Moore’s Law.
The era of silicon-based microchips advancing in accordance with Moore’s Law (feature sizes reducing by a factor of two approximately every two years) is nearing an end due to limits imposed by fundamental physics. The DOE will develop a plan for a new research program on technologies “Beyond Moore’s Law,” to understand the challenges that these dramatically different technologies pose to DOE mission applications and to identify the hardware, software and algorithms that will need to be developed for DOE mission applications to harness these developing technologies.
Strategy #3: By September 2017 identify software technology investments needed to accelerate delivery of a capable exascale system by 2023.
DOE will meet its NSCI assignment through the Department’s Exascale Computing Initiative (ECI). The ECI, which is a partnership between Department’s Office of Science and the National Nuclear Security Administration, will accelerate the research and development to overcome key exascale challenges in parallelism, resilience, energy efficiency, and memory leading to delivering a capable exascale systems by 2023.

STATUS: This measure has been completed. The multiyear exascale research program plan in support of DOE’s contribution to the President’s National Strategic Computing Initiative (NSCI) has been incorporated into the NSCI Implementation Plan. The NSCI Implementation Plan was submitted to the co-chairs of the NSCI Executive Council on October 26, 2015.
Strategy #2: By Q4 FY 2017 establish a plan for DOE’s contribution to research new progressive technologies that perform beyond Moore’s Law.
STATUS: Q4 FY16 Milestone: Initiate Interagency discussion and consideration of the draft plan for a research program into technologies “beyond Moore’s Law”.
Result: Milestone met. SC briefed the National Strategic Computing Initiative Working Group, the Quantum Information Systems Working Group, and OMB in September 2016.
Strategy #3: By Q4 FY 2017 identify software technology investments needed to accelerate delivery of a capable exascale system.
STATUS: Q4 FY16 Milestone: Finalize gathering of application requirements Result: Milestone met. SC completed a series of application requirements workshops that spanned our mission space before the end of September 2016.
